Labiaplasty
Overview
Labiaplasty, also called vaginal rejuvenation, is a surgical procedure used to reduce, repair, or beautify the labia, which are skin folds surrounding the vulva. The procedure may be performed for comfort, cosmetic improvement, or both. In addition to natural imperfections, weight gain, childbirth, and other factors can cause tissue to stretch, tear, or become enlarged. This can cause chafing, physical discomfort, difficult personal hygiene, and psychological discomfort.
At one time, vaginal beautification was a sensitive topic, but it has become accepted and embraced both socially and in the medical community. Today, a growing number of women in Orange County are seeking labiaplasty to improve their comfort, confidence, and quality of life.
The procedure
The most common labiaplasty focuses on the labia minor (inner lips), which are most likely to be damaged or deformed. However, depending on the procedure, labia major (outer lips) may be modified. Either surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, using anesthesia. There are two techniques, known as the "V" method and the trim method. In either case, the procedure usually takes between one and two hours.
The first is accomplished by creating a precise incision, removing a V-shaped section of tissue from each side. The "V" is then brought together and sutured, creating a sleek, symmetrical appearance with natural shape and coloring. This technique is often preferable to the "trimming" method, because the scar is minimized and effectively hidden in natural skin folds. When the trim technique is used, excess tissue is removed along the edge of the labia. The best technique depends on your anatomy and desired outcome.
Recovery
Most patients are able to return to work in about a week, and resume strenuous activity about a month after the surgery. The labia are resilient, and heal quickly, but newly healed tissue is fragile. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for about four weeks, and resumed with caution and adequate lubrication.
Results
Initially, there will be some swelling, which should begin subsiding within a few days. Depending on the technique and the extent of the surgery, it may take up to six months for the final results to be visible. Most women are very pleased with the aesthetic improvement, ability to wear clothing comfortably, and increased confidence in intimate situations.
