Typically, if implants don’t show clinical signs of problems, there is no need to replace them. Some women have had the same implants for 20 years or longer.
Implants, however, are not immune from wear and tear. The implant may need to be replaced in the event of a leak or rupture. Capsular contracture also necessitates implant replacement, because the normal scar tissue that builds up around implants can tighten or contract. When this contraction occurs, natural implant movement is restricted. As the condition progresses, your soft and natural-looking breasts may become firm and painful and look abnormal.
Advances in breast implants have minimized unwanted effects, such as rippling or wrinkling. Earlier-generation implants’ fill volumes and gels are different from today’s implants. Greater fill volume and a more cohesive gel generally means implants will hold up better as the outer shell is optimally-protected, which leads to fewer potential problems. Plus, these advanced materials offer full coverage over the implant, so those implants aren’t visible to the eye.
There are generally two types of implants to choose from. A Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Nguyen will work with you to determine the best implant type to get the results you desire, and the implant that is most suited to your unique anatomical characteristics.
- Saline – The implant starts as an empty shell. The shell is filled with sterile salt water at the time of your procedure, until uniform shape and firmness is achieved. These implants may be placed with very small incisions.
- Silicone – The shell is pre-filled with a gel whose texture and feel mimics natural breast tissue. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has confirmed, following a 1o-year study, that these implants are safe and health risks were deemed not significant.
