Brachioplasty
Overview
Following major weight loss, many people feel uncomfortable or self-conscious in short sleeves due to excess, sagging skin on the upper arms. This loose skin can also cause discomfort, and prevent clothing from fitting properly. The effects of aging, weight loss, gravity, and loss of skin elasticity are all contributing factors in sagging arms. Brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift, surgically removes excess tissue from the upper arm, creating a more pleasing appearance and improving firmness. If you are a major weight loss patient, we do not recommend any body contouring procedures until your weight has stabilized.
The procedure
An arm lift procedure is tailored to the unique requirements of each patient. The number of incisions required will vary, depending on the volume of excess skin and fat. If the amount of skin to be removed is minimal, the procedure may require no more than an incision in the armpit. However, in most cases the incision extends from the armpit to the elbow. When an arm lift and breast lift are performed at the same time, the incisions may connect where excess skin at the side of the breast is removed.
Anesthesia will be administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The surgery usually takes between two and three hours, depending on the extent of the revisions needed. Sutures are placed internally. They will be absorbed by your body gradually; there is no need to have them removed later. The area will be bandaged, and may be fitted with a supportive compression garment, to minimize post-surgical swelling. All tape over the incisions should remain in place for two weeks.
Results
After brachioplasty your arms will be firmer, smaller, and more attractive. You will find that clothing fits more comfortably, and your arms will be much more attractive when you wear short sleeves. In the initial stages of healing, the incisions may be red and appear lumpy, but they should lighten and flatten over several months.
