Body
Overview
The desire to appear trim, fit, and young is universal, and body image is just as important for men as it is for women. At one time, there was a certain stigma attached to male plastic surgery, or any kind of cosmetic enhancement. Men were not expected to take a significant time grooming, give any thought to fashion, or anything else that indicated they cared about their appearance. Fortunately, that has changed in modern times. A large (and growing) percentage of today's cosmetic surgery patients are male.
Although most cosmetic procedures may be used for either gender, the desired result, and therefore the precise technique, varies. Dr. Nguyen has extensive experience sculpting the male physique. Whereas women often desire less predominant muscles and delicate features, men are typically looking for a bolder, well-defined, physically fit body shape. Additionally, the technicalities of a given procedure, such as the precise location of incisions, often vary due to the anatomical differences in the male and female body. Therefore, it is important to choose a skilled surgeon who has specific experience in male plastic surgery.
Procedures
Some of the most commonly requested procedures include:
- Male breast reduction – Enlargement of the male breast can be caused by fat deposits, glandular tissue, or a combination. Liposuction is used to remove excess fat, but surgical revision is needed to remove glandular tissue. When both of these factors are involved, a combination of procedures is used. Surgery can also be used to reduce the size of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), if necessary.
- Pectoral implants – Also called "pec implants," this increasingly popular procedure gives the chest a well-developed, muscular appearance. Many men have underdeveloped muscles, even with regular workouts. Augmentation with surgical implants can help men achieve the chiseled, physically fit, "weight lifter" appearance they desire.
- Liposuction – Although the male body tends to distribute fat slightly differently than the female body, both are susceptible to stubborn fat pockets, especially in the midsection of the body. Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that removes excess fat to achieve a more trim, fit, healthy appearance.
- Tummy tuck – Sometimes liposuction is not sufficient, especially when excess skin is present. A tummy tuck can eliminate sagging, remove fat, and give the abdomen a more sculpted appearance. However, some men tend to accumulate fat around their organs beneath the abdominal muscles (intra-abdominal fat), which cannot be removed. After an examination, your doctor can tell you if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck.
Results
Plastic surgery is not a replacement for diet, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle. However, it can provide improvement that is beyond the realm of these measures. You can walk tall and proud with your new slim and trim, sculpted and chiseled physique.
